Choosing Between Embroidered and Woven Patches

Embroidered patches have a raised, three-dimensional texture created by stitching thread over a base fabric. They are the standard choice for logos, crests, and brand marks where the tactile quality of the patch is part of the brand experience. The raised texture catches light and creates visual depth. However, embroidery has a minimum stitch size — very fine text (below approximately 4mm letter height) and photographic detail cannot be accurately reproduced.

Woven patches are produced on a loom, weaving colored threads directly into the patch surface without raised texture. Because the thread is finer and the weave is tighter, woven patches can reproduce small text, fine lines, and complex multi-color artwork that embroidery cannot. They have a flatter, more fabric-like appearance. Woven patches are the correct choice when your artwork includes fine detail, small text, or gradient-like color transitions.

Backing Method Guide

Iron-on backing uses a heat-activated adhesive that bonds to fabric when pressed with a household iron or heat press. It is the most convenient application method for end customers and is standard for retail patches. Note that iron-on adhesive alone is not recommended for garments that will be washed frequently — for permanent application on workwear or uniforms, sew-on or a combination of iron-on plus sewing is recommended. Velcro backing allows patches to be repositioned and is the standard for tactical, military, and modular uniform applications. Sew-on is the most durable permanent attachment method and is required for heavyweight fabrics such as denim and canvas.
